Hand Sanding for Fine Wood Finishes The softer cut of garnet on our 3M™ Paper Sheet 110N leaves a smoother finish than other abrasive minerals when sanding wood by hand. A light A-weight paper backing provides flexibility and its flat profile leaves a consistent, light scratch. Available in a broad range of grades from 80 to 220, this popular 9 x 11-inch sheet can easily be cut to fit any hand tool or folded to reach critical surfaces, corners and recesses. Garnet Is Good for Wood Though garnet is softer than other minerals, it fractures in use, revealing new sharp edges. Garnet mineral dulls more quickly than other abrasive minerals, an advantage when working with wood. It cuts less deeply and leaves a smoother finish. Finely finished wood products depend upon meticulous sanding to prepare wood for stains and other coatings. Garnet also tends to burnish wood, which closes off pores, preventing excessive absorption of stain for more even coloration.
